Deepfakes poses a new challenge where the fraudster on the other side imitates the voice (and soon video) of your dear once and puts you under such pressure that you are convinced of his trap.
I am thankful to Sh. T V Ramachandran to share his experience and on following my advice he got the assurance that he would get back his money. The government is making reasonable efforts to control the challenges of emerging crime but a lot more needs to be done. This video is to make aware the people in India as to who to report and what support is available.
Cyber frauds are seriously challenging the digital economy. After learning about many cases of cyber fraud many people feel highly unsafe and unsure of online transactions. The advantages of technology and ease of online transactions and also the flexibility of digital world it is necessary that we must adapt to the new shift in this information age. There is no escape from information technology and thus it is better to be prepared to defend ourselves. The first and most effective line of defense in our fight against cyber fraudsters is awareness.
This is a wonderful example as to how live audio and video Deepfake can be created on the fly and there is practically no scope of identification. Therefore, in a recent judgement Delhi High Court refused online witness disposition, fearing that deepfake may depose.
This example requires special equipment and very high processing powers. However, with efficient coding and superior processors it will be within the reach of common man. Also in case stakes are really high like in case of 'Whaling' even such equipment can be used even today. Zoom and many Video Conference services providers allow Avatar to imitate you. Avatar is nothing but a 3D representation of human face.
In 2016 I had created a system using 100 mobiles to create exact copy of any person. Today the same thing can be done using a single video. Such an Avatar of yours replacing criminal's face with your 3D face can easily fool anyone even today. The future scary but we need to develop counter technologies. The fight will be between good & bad in metaverse too.
The law making, law enforcement and judicial system are way behind.
